Anointing of the Sick

Anointing of the Sick

If you are experiencing an illness, injury, impending surgery, or weakness due to age, there is a powerful help available for you here in our church. Most especially, we want you to be spiritually fortified and experience the peace that God alone can give. So it is natural and wise to turn to God, our Father, and to Jesus, our Savior, with your needs – physical, emotional, and spiritual.

Those who are seriously sick or have been ill for a long period of time should receive the sacrament of the sick and Holy Communion. Call the parish office to make arrangements. If you are home bound because of illness or age and would like to be visited, please call the parish office.

The anointing of the sick is a sacrament of the Church in which the priest prays, lays hands, and anoints the sick person with blessed oil. This sacrament may be preceded by reconciliation and followed by the Eucharist. The anointing of the sick may be repeated if the recipient suffers from a different illness or injury, or if the same illness or condition becomes more serious.

The elderly may be anointed if they have become weakened even though no serious illness is present.

Another choice is to celebrate the sacrament at a weekday liturgy before going to the hospital, or you may celebrate the sacrament at home with family and friends gathered in support and prayer. Of course, should there be an emergency situation, or you or someone in your family is incapacitated, the priest can come to the hospital, your home, or other location. Call the parish office at 608-782-2953 for assistance.
